Why visit
About Fort Batenstein
Fort Batenstein is a Dutch-era trading fort built in 1656, standing on the high hill behind Butre village in the Ahanta West Municipal District of Ghana's Western Region, above the estuary of the Butre River and overlooking the Atlantic. It is preserved as a ruin and is listed as a National Monument, forming part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions," inscribed in 1979.
The fort's history is closely tied to the coast's trading rivalries. It was built by the Dutch West India Company in 1656, in part to displace the Swedish Africa Company's trading lodge at Butre, and the Treaty of Butre was signed there on 27 August 1656 between the Dutch and the Ahanta. The name translates as "profit fort." A sawmill was built at the fort in the 18th century, and it became the focal point of Dutch military effort during the 1837 Dutch-Ahanta War. The fort passed with the entire Dutch Gold Coast to Britain in 1872, and was consolidated between 2010 and 2011 with co-funding from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For a visitor, the appeal is largely the setting and the surviving fabric rather than a furnished museum. The fort sits on a steep hill above the village, and access is on foot up the hill. The most common approach is a roughly 6 km coastal trail from Busua taking two to three hours, which can be muddy and slippery after rain; Butre is also reachable by road via Agona Nkwanta, or as a stop on the coast road between Busua or Dixcove and Axim. A dugout canoe crossing of the Butre River is part of daily life in the village.
Guided tours of the fort and the surrounding area are offered by Butre's Town Tourism Development Committee, which also arranges boat trips on the Butre River and lagoon and hiking excursions. No on-site visitor facilities such as toilets, a shop or a cafe are documented, and no formal step-free access information is published. GMMB publishes opening hours of 9:00am to 4:30pm and a fee schedule reviewed in February 2013, so current fees should be confirmed before travelling.
