About Butre Town Tourism Development Committee Information Booth

The Butre Town Tourism Development Committee (TTDC) information booth is a community-run tourist information point in the centre of Butre, a small fishing village on a sheltered bay where the Butre River meets the Atlantic. The village lies in the Ahanta West Municipal District of Ghana's Western Region, between Busua and Dixcove, roughly 20 km southwest of Takoradi.

The booth is the village's front door for visitors. Local official guides are on hand to show people around and to explain the activities and attractions available in the area, and guided tours can be arranged through the committee. Documented options include a walk up to Fort Batenstein, a Dutch fort of 1656 that survives as a preserved ruin on the hill behind the village, a boat trip on the Nana Butre Lagoon, and hiking excursions in the surrounding area.

Butre's committee is not an outside commercial operation. It was created under the UNWTO ST-EP West Coast Tourism Region project, delivered in three phases between 2006 and 2010 with funding from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which trained staff in seven villages including Butre. Butre's TTDC is described as one of the most active and successful of these, receiving 1,600 tourists in 2010. Income from tourism activities is deposited into a community bank account and has been used for village projects including a rebuilt bridge, tree cutting for safety, a football park and a borehole.

The village itself has nearly 400 inhabitants, largely of the Ahanta ethnic group, and sits by a forest on its sheltered bay. For a visitor travelling the coast between Busua and Dixcove, the booth is a practical first stop: a place to find a guide, understand what can be visited locally, and direct spending toward community projects.

Practical details are limited in the available sources. No opening hours, prices, contact details, or facilities such as toilets, a shop, parking or refreshments are documented at the booth, so visitors should treat these as unconfirmed and plan around the village's small scale.
