Butre is a small fishing village in Ghana's Western Region, where the Atlantic meets a river mouth and a hilltop fort looks out over both. It is a place to slow down: walk, paddle, eat by the sea and let local guides show you around. Almost everything here is within reach of the village itself, which is what makes it such an easy and rewarding stop.
The places listed share a common thread. They are all rooted in Butre and its surroundings, and most are run with the community rather than apart from it. The Butre Community Tourism and Butre Town Tourism Development Committee information booths are the natural starting points, arranging local guides, Fort Batenstein hill walks and lagoon canoe trips. From there the Busua–Butre Coastal Hike climbs laterite headlands above the Atlantic to Fort Batenstein, the Dutch trading fort built in 1656 and now a ruin on the hill above the village.
They differ in pace and in what you do. The Butre River Canoe & Mangrove Experience, run by The Hideout Lodge as a lodge and community activity, is a gentle dugout-canoe trip upstream. The Butre Beach Lodge & Restaurant Cluster, including Hideout Lodge, Fanta's Folly and Afro Beach, is where you eat, drink and stay. Some days you hike; others you simply sit by the water.
