Why visit
About Butre Community Tourism / Tourist Information Booth
Butre Community Tourism is the community-run visitor base for Butre, a small fishing village on a sheltered bay beside forest land in the Ahanta West Municipal District of Ghana's Western Region. The village sits between Busua and Asemkaw, roughly 20 km southwest of Takoradi, and is home to nearly 400 people, largely of the Ahanta ethnic group.
The practical starting point is a tourist information booth in the village centre, where local tour guides are on hand to show visitors around and provide tourist information. Butre has a Town Tourism Development Committee, a community governance structure that welcomes tourists; its office has trained staff who receive visitors and inform them about activities and attractions. The committee arranges guided tours of Fort Batenstein and the local area, and canoe trips on Butre Lagoon and River are offered locally.
What a visitor can reasonably expect, according to the available sources, is a village walk observing Ahanta culture, traditions and livelihood; a steep climb up the hill to the ruins of Fort Batenstein, built in 1656, for wide views over the village, coast, lagoon, rock formations, forest, fields and hills; and a paddle by traditional dug-out canoe on the lagoon and river, where wildlife such as crocodiles, kingfishers, mudskippers and crabs may be seen. Butre was one of three communities — with Busua and Dixcove — developed for West Coast water-based tourism.
Planning details are limited. The sources read document no toilets, shop or parking at the booth, and no prices or opening hours. Wikipedia gives village feature coordinates of 4°49′23″N 1°55′01″W (4.82306, -1.91694), which locate Butre rather than a verified booth entrance. Visitors should treat timings, fees and facilities as unconfirmed and check locally on arrival.
