Why visit
About Aburi Craft Village
Aburi Craft Village, also written Aburi Crafts Village, is a craft centre and artisan market in Aburi in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It sits a short distance from the Aburi Botanical Gardens, in the Akuapem South Municipal District, along the N4 near the Aburi Y Junction. The centre was originally known as Antique Village and was established by the Trade Ministry roughly thirty years before 2021.
Visitors walk through rows of stalls and shops selling Ghanaian handicrafts, including hand-carved wooden sculptures, beadwork, woven baskets, Kente fabrics, smocks and leather goods. Artisans can be watched at work, and the craftspeople are described as willing to explain the meanings behind pieces and to customise items.
In December 2021 the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, officially opened a refurbished facility on the site, converting it into a multi-purpose centre for locally produced handicrafts and a venue for international art shows. The refurbished building includes a modern showroom and exhibition centre, partitioned to reflect aspects of Ghanaian homes — living area, bedroom, dining area, kitchen and hall utility spaces — displaying furniture, accessories and decor. GEPA describes the centre as a one-stop shop for authentic Ghanaian handicraft of premium quality. The opening was attended by Otoobour Djan Kwasi II, Aburihene and Acting President of the Akuapem Traditional Council, and by Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry Herbert Krapa.
Because the village lies close to the Aburi Botanical Gardens, the two are easily combined in a single outing. Practical details are less well documented: no verified opening hours, admission arrangements, parking, toilets, food outlets or guided tours were found, and no official website for the village itself. Phone numbers circulate on third-party business directories but are not confirmed by an operator page; GEPA's head office can be reached on +233-302740909 or [email protected]. Visitors should confirm current hours and access before travelling.
