Explore Ghana
Aburi sits high on the Akuapem Ridge in Ghana's Eastern Region, where the air is cooler than the coast and the views stretch far over Greater Accra. It is an easy escape from the city and a rewarding day out in its own right, with gardens, forest, craftwork and family amusements all close together.
The places here share that ridge setting and a relaxed, outdoorsy feel. Aburi Botanical Gardens, opened in March 1890, spreads across 64.8 hectares of plant collections and recreation areas, with a craft centre and hiking trail among its draws. Just nearby, Aburi Craft Village is an artisan market and craft centre refurbished by GEPA in 2021. Aburi Forest Reserve offers quiet trails and birdlife, while the Aburi Mountain and Akuapem Ridge viewpoints, a hill range of roughly 350 to 500 metres, give you the panoramas and cooler weather the town is known for.
They differ in mood and purpose. The gardens and forest suit slow walks and nature; the craft village is for browsing and buying; Papaye Recreational Village at Konkonuru, run by the Papaye Group, brings a mini zoo, games, rides and shows for weekends and holidays.
Good to know
Plan Aburi as a half day or a full day, and group the Botanical Gardens with the Craft Village since they sit near each other. The ridge is cooler and can be misty or wet, so bring a light layer and shoes you don't mind muddying. Getting between the gardens, the craft village, the forest reserve and the ridge viewpoints is easiest with your own transport or a hired car and driver, as the places are spread around town. Papaye Recreational Village is at Konkonuru, so allow extra time if you are adding it on. Before you go, check current opening arrangements and any entry fees directly, as these change, and note that some sources conflate Aburi Forest Reserve with the Botanical Gardens, so confirm which trails you want.
