Why visit
About Aburi Forest Reserve
Aburi Forest Reserve is a protected forest area at Aburi, in the Akuapim South Municipal District of Ghana's Eastern Region. It sits on the Akuapem Ridge, part of the Akwapim-Togo Range, above the Accra coastal plain. Directory and editorial sources describe it as a protected forest area offering birdlife and quiet trails, and the misty canopy of the Aburi Gardens forest reserve is noted as part of the Akuapem Range.
For a visitor, the appeal is the forest itself rather than built attractions. Aburi is reported to host more than 200 bird species, with the botanical gardens and surrounding forests cited as birdwatching locations. The setting is upland: a GBIF-hosted dataset on tree diversity in the protected forest at Aburi Botanic Gardens gives an elevation of 350 to 500 metres and notes that the forest overlooks the Accra coastal plain.
That dataset also states the protected forest covers 52.6 hectares, within a botanical gardens area of 64.8 hectares of which 12.2 hectares are developed formal garden. A Facebook post by The Ghana Insider describes the Aburi Botanical Gardens as covering about 160 acres, with only about 35 acres developed as gardens and the remainder left as natural forest reserve. These figures come from different sources and do not agree.
An important limitation: the sources conflate this reserve with the adjacent Aburi Botanical Gardens. The reserve's separate gazetted boundary and status were not verified, and no separate gazetted coordinates for the forest reserve were found. The coordinates commonly cited for Aburi are for the town itself, roughly 5°51′N 0°11′W.
Practical planning details — opening hours, entry fees, guided walks, trail conditions and how to reach the forest on foot or by road — are not established by the available evidence. Visitors should treat the reserve and the botanical gardens as overlapping in current reporting, and confirm access arrangements locally before travelling.
