Akosombo sits on the Volta River in Ghana's Eastern Region, and almost everything worth doing here comes back to the water. The Akosombo Dam, a rock-fill embankment dam operated by the Volta River Authority, holds back Lake Volta, and that vast lake shapes the town's days. Some of the listed places are about understanding the dam and its story; others are about getting out onto the lake itself.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) Museum gathers exhibits on the hydroelectric project, local history and how the dams changed communities nearby, so it is a good place to start if you want context before you look at the water. From there, the mood shifts. Dodi World runs cruises aboard the three-deck MV Dodi Princess II, sailing to Dodi Island with live band music and water sports, and the island itself is inhabited and reached by a cruise boat trip of roughly two hours from Akosombo.

For something entirely different, Akosombo Market trades in yam, maize, cassava and vegetables, with its main market days on Mondays and Thursdays. Between a dam viewpoint, an island community, a lake cruise and a busy market, the town offers both engineering history and everyday Ghanaian life.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan your days around the water. Cruises to Dodi Island take roughly two hours each way, so a lake trip will shape your schedule; check sailing times and availability with Dodi World before you commit to a date. If the market interests you, aim for a Monday or Thursday, its main market days. Before visiting the Akosombo Dam area or the VRA Museum, confirm access arrangements and opening times in advance, as sites linked to the dam may have restrictions. Akosombo is a compact town, so allow time to move between the dam, the market and the boat departure point rather than trying to fit everything into one afternoon.
