Craft in Greater Accra is not something kept behind glass. At the Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop in Teshie, Ga craftspeople build design coffins — abebuu adekai, "boxes with proverbs" — and visitors are welcome to watch the work taking shape. In central Accra, the Accra Arts Centre, also known as the Centre for National Culture, is the country's largest arts and crafts marketplace, with free entry, off Atta Mills High Street. Further out, the Nkyinkyim Museum in Nuhalenya-Ada is an outdoor museum and evolving sculpture installation created by the artist Kwame Akoto-Bamfo to honour enslaved African ancestors.

All three are working places rather than displays, and all three sit within Greater Accra, so they can be woven into a single trip. They differ in mood and setting: one is a studio where a craft is practised daily, one is a busy city market, and one is a quiet outdoor site shaped by an artist's vision. Together they show how much of Ghana's making and remembering happens in the open.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan your days around the towns rather than the clock: Teshie, central Accra and Nuhalenya-Ada are separate stops, so group nearby ones together and allow time for traffic between them. The Accra Arts Centre has free entry, but check current details for the Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop and Nkyinkyim Museum before you set out, as these are working and evolving sites. At a working studio, ask before photographing people or pieces, and be guided by whoever is on site. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes for outdoor ground, and carry small notes if you hope to buy crafts.
