Greater Accra holds some of Ghana's most moving places to spend a slow afternoon. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra honours Ghana's first President, Kwame Nkrumah, and his wife Fathia on the Old Polo Grounds, while the National Museum of Ghana on Barnes Road in Adabraka opened in 1957 and is run by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. Osu Castle, also called Christiansborg, is a 17th-century fort at Osu and part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, and Ussher Fort in James Town, built by the Dutch in the same century, now holds the Ussher Fort Museum on the history of the slave trade in Ghana.

They share a thread of history, heritage and memory, but each tells it differently. Two are forts by the sea, one is a national collection, one is a memorial park and mausoleum, and Nkyinkyim Museum in Fantevikope is something else again: an outdoor museum and evolving sculpture installation in Nuhalenya-Ada, created by the artist Kwame Akoto-Bamfo to honour enslaved African ancestors. Some visits are quiet and reflective, others are about art, community and craft.

Good to know

Before you go

Most of these places sit in or near central Accra, so group the city ones together and treat Nkyinkyim Museum as a separate trip out to Nuhalenya-Ada. Allow unhurried time at each rather than rushing between them, and remember that several are outdoor sites, so weather matters. Opening hours, entry arrangements and any guided tours can change, and some sites are used for official occasions, so check ahead with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board or the site directly before you travel. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
