About Anlo-Keta Sea Turtle Conservation Experience
The Anlo-Keta Sea Turtle Conservation Experience is a community-based conservation and ecotourism initiative on the Anlo-Keta coast of southeastern Ghana, in the Volta Region's Anloga District. It sits within the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site (site no. 567), the largest lagoon complex in Ghana, covering 136,000 hectares. The Ramsar listing gives the site's coordinates as 05°56'21"N 00°50'E; no verified visitor entrance or meeting-point coordinates were found.
The landscape here is a mix of brackish lagoon water, floodplains, swamps, mangroves and open Atlantic beach. The complex is reported to host about 80% of Ghana's waterfowl and three threatened sea turtle species: green, leatherback and olive ridley. The leatherback, listed by IUCN as critically endangered, is reported as the most frequently observed species at the site.
Conservation work is carried out by a local Sea Turtle Conservation association together with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, with NGO support from The Development Institute and ICA International, using the CREMA community resource management approach. Documented activity spans the communities of Akplortorkor, Agbledomi, Atiteti, Fuveme and Dzita. Reported results include 25 trained youth volunteers, five community patrol teams monitoring day and night, 55 turtles rescued and 2,000 eggs protected. The Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site Management Plan identifies the most advanced proposed CREMA as located along the Atlantic coast in Dzita, specialised in conservation and eco-tourism related to sea turtles.
A local operator, Keta Ramsar Centre NGO, promotes turtle and mangrove conservation and ecotourism in the Volta Region. Because the evidence covers the conservation programme rather than visitor logistics, details such as opening times, fees, guided-tour formats, seasonality and booking arrangements are not confirmed here and should be checked with the operator before travelling.
