About Mami Rasta Shrine

Mami Rasta Shrine is a shrine in Anyanui, a community in the Keta Municipal District of the Volta Region, Ghana. Keta Tourism notes that the district has a great number of shrines owing to its rich heritage, and that visitors are especially welcome to visit Mami Rasta at her shrine in Anyanui. The custodian is referred to as Madame Mamishie Rasta.

As described by Keta Tourism, the custodian's story holds that she was called and taken by a wise man who brought her to a house under the river, where she stayed for three years and was taught spiritual healing. She is said to be able to ask the gods what sickness a person suffers from and what treatment to impose. The gods are represented by three crocodiles living in the shrine.

Visitors are invited to offer a live chicken as a means to spiritually cleanse themselves, and to take part in spiritual drumming sessions held every Friday at around 3pm. Because this is a sacred and active shrine, visitor etiquette and permission protocols should be confirmed with the custodian or with Keta Tourism before any visit.

Anyanui sits on the far side of the Volta from Ada. Ada Tourism describes three ways of reaching it: the Wednesday ferry from Ada, one of the passenger boats on any day of the week, or a land connection by tro-tro via Sogakope. Visitors are advised to call ahead so that someone can meet them at the harbour in Anyanui. For direct contact with Mamishie Rasta and a guide to collect you at the ferry, Ada Tourism gives the phone number of Mamishie's son, 0249115879, and also suggests contacting the Tourist Information Office to arrange pickup at the harbour. Keta Tourism gives [email protected] for more information about the shrine.

Practical details remain thin. No opening hours, fees, or step-free access information are published, and the shrine's exact position is not established — the coordinates available describe the village of Anyanui, not the shrine itself.
