About Dzita Sea Turtle Site

Dzita Sea Turtle Site is a community-linked sea turtle conservation and viewing site on the coast at Dzita, in the Anloga District of Ghana's Volta Region. The National Commission on Culture lists it among the tourist attractions of the Anlo Traditional Area, describing it as the "Dzita sea turtle site where you see turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs."

The site is tied to local conservation work. Dzita Turtle Protection was set up in 2013 to protect sea turtles that come ashore to lay on a 20 km stretch of Atlantic coast at Dzita. Dream Big Ghana NGO lists the initiative among its partners, and Meet Me There Eco Lodge describes that NGO as its partner and the beneficiary of guest stays. The lodge sits between the villages of Dzita and Dzita-Abledomi and operates a lodging-guests-only policy because it serves as the NGO headquarters.

The wider conservation picture is a recovering one. The Environmental Justice Foundation reported that leatherback turtles were formerly abundant in the Volta Region and that the moonlit beaches of Dzita and Savietua were once busy nesting beaches. The Development Institute lists Dzita among Anloga District communities covered by a sea turtle conservation and sustainable livelihoods project within the Anlo-Keta Lagoon Ramsar site, supported by BothEnds and the French Committee of IUCN.

Nesting here is seasonal, not year-round. The laying season runs roughly six months, from about September to March; during that window the Dzita Turtle Protection team patrols the beach at night to assist laying turtles and move eggs to a hatchery. General sources on Ghana sea turtle nesting give a season of roughly August to March, peaking in October for olive ridley and December to January for leatherback. Turtle viewing is therefore not guaranteed, and a sighting depends on the season and on the night.

Practical planning is limited by what is documented. No verified coordinates exist for the turtle site itself; a village-level location for Dzita is recorded at 5.773647 N, 0.768950 E, which marks the village centre rather than a confirmed visitor entrance. Opening hours, fees, guided-visit arrangements and access conditions are not established in the available sources and should be confirmed locally before travelling.
