About Antoa Nyamaa Shrine
Antoa Nyamaa is a river god and deity in Ghana, with a shrine in the town of Antoa in the Ashanti Region. The river is regarded as the spiritual supreme court of Asante, which is the main reason the site carries weight for visitors interested in Asante religious and customary life.
The shrine is harboured in a small stream called Asuo Nyamaa, on a small river reached from the town of Antoa along a farm path. Antoa itself lies in the Kwabre East District, about seven miles from Kumasi. No verified coordinates were obtained for the shrine, so the locality and the farm-path approach are the reliable setting details rather than a precise pin.
The deity is widely known in the Ashanti Region for duabɔ, or grievance imprecation, and nsedie, assertive self-imprecatory oaths. Accounts describe Antoa Nyamaa as visiting mayhem on people cursed in its name. To overturn a curse, a victim is made to bend in the river while a fowl is killed over their head; if the fowl lands with its breast facing up the victim is redeemed, otherwise the victim must beat the water's surface while pleading with the god for forgiveness.
The founding of Antoa is attributed to Ampoma, the younger of the twins of Adwoa Birago, ancestress of the Asene clan. In 2015 thieves broke into the strong room of the shrine and stole gold ornaments, idols and other valuables worth thousands of cedis.
Practical visitor information is limited. No opening hours, fees, guided-visit arrangements or facilities are documented in the available sources, and the shrine is an active place of worship rather than a managed attraction. Residents of Antoa have publicly urged their chief to charge tourists who enter the shrine, which indicates that visits are not simply open access. Anyone planning to go should treat access as something to confirm locally in Antoa beforehand, and should approach the site and its customary protocols with restraint.
