Why visit

About Lake Bosomtwe Information Centre

The Lake Bosomtwe Information Centre sits at Abono, the first village reached on the tarred road that climbs from Kumasi over the crater rim and descends to the lake. Abono is described as the main tourist hub and shoreline settlement at Bosomtwe, and the centre is the community's entry point for orientation: Visit Ghana states that "there is an information centre, where you can find out about the lake and conservation efforts and also arrange for a boat trip on the lake."

The setting is unusual. Lake Bosomtwe is described as Ghana's only true inland lake, lying inside a meteorite impact crater in the Ashanti Region. The lake covers roughly 49 sq km and is about 70–73 m deep, with steep crater walls rising 150–425 m above the water. It is a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve and overlaps the Bosomtwe Range Forest Reserve; the area supports 35 tree species and is used for climate-change research and environmental education.

Ashanti tradition holds the lake sacred. Regular dugout canoes are taboo, and fishermen use the padua, a flat wooden plank. Oral tradition dates the lake's discovery to 1648 by the hunter Akora Bompe, who named it "antelope god."

What a visitor can reasonably expect at Abono is limited but concrete. Visit Ghana lists boat rides, swimming and hiking as possible at the lake, and notes that someone may open a coconut or two for a few cedis. This Is Kumasi records police presence, local food vendors and resting spots in the village.

Practical details are thin. A small community-maintained entry fee is charged at the lake entry point, but the exact amount is not published; a third-party tour review mentions a figure that is unverified and should not be treated as the official fee. Opening hours are not established by the available sources. The lake's cited midpoint, 6°30'16"N, 1°24'31"W, is a feature coordinate rather than a confirmed visitor entrance.
