Why visit
About Beyin Visitor Centre
The Beyin Visitor Centre is the reception and ticket point on the mainland where visitors arrange guided dugout-canoe tours to Nzulezo, a stilt village of roughly 400 years standing built over Lake Tadane in Ghana's Western Region. It sits in Beyin, in the Jomoro Municipal District, near the coast at the far western edge of Ghana close to the border with Côte d'Ivoire.
The centre's role is practical: it is where tours are arranged and where the canoe journey begins. The trip covers about 5 km and takes 45 minutes to an hour, passing marshes, swamp forest and open pools before opening onto Lake Tadane. The route lies within the Amansuri Wetland, described in the source material as a Ramsar site and Ghana's largest inland swamp forest, and designated an Important Bird Area. The full visit is given as about three hours.
The centre is also the base for other activity in the area. The beach beside it hosts a sea turtle conservation project run with the Ghana Wildlife Society, with evening tours from October through August, and camping is available at the centre in Beyin. Fort Apollonia in Beyin is a nearby attraction.
Access is by road from Takoradi, about 90 km west to the centre in Beyin; Nzulezo lies 5 km north of Beyin by canoe, reached by an unpaved road and then a short walk to the canoe. Lifejackets are stated to be available, and hours are given as 8 am to 4 pm daily. Contact details differ between sources: the Visit Ghana page lists 0553488755, while the Nzulezo Stilt Village Tourism Project publishes +233 244 606 762 and [email protected]. Visitors should confirm current hours, fees and departure arrangements directly before travelling.
