Why visit

About Nzulezo Stilt Village

Nzulezo is a community built entirely on stilts over the Amanzule River and its surrounding wetlands near Beyin, in the Jomoro Municipality of Ghana's Western Region, roughly 90 km west of Takoradi. It is described as Ghana's only stilt village, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board characterises it as a 400-year-old stilt-propped water settlement built on Lake Tadane. UNESCO's World Heritage Centre lists the Nzulezo Stilt Settlement on Ghana's Tentative List, submitted on 17 January 2000.

Visiting begins on the mainland. Tickets are bought at the reception centre in Beyin, and from there an authorised guide accompanies visitors on a canoe ride of roughly 45 minutes to an hour through the Amanzule wetlands to reach the village. Life jackets are provided. On arrival, guided walking tours follow wooden walkways between the stilt houses, and guides offer storytelling about the village's history, myths and traditions. Birdwatching is part of the visit — the wetlands are said to host over 100 bird species — along with community interaction and photography.

The name is commonly explained as an Nzema word meaning "surface of water", and tradition holds that the community's ancestors migrated from Walata guided by a snail. Thursday is treated as a sacred day on the lake, when villagers avoid strenuous activity. Nzulezo is a living village rather than a staged attraction, so visitors should expect to move through a working community.

The tourism office and canoe trips generally run daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, including weekends and public holidays, with canoe trips extended for guesthouse guests; early or late tours require special arrangements. Published rates from November 2024 list GH¢60 for Ghanaian adults, GH¢40 for Ghanaian students, GH¢160 for foreign adults and GH¢130 for foreign students, plus a motorised canoe fee of GH¢120 for one to six people and GH¢50 for a detailed history tour. Older visitor reviews citing about GH¢55 round trip conflict with these current published rates, so confirm fees at the reception centre before travelling.
