About Wli Waterfalls

Wli Waterfalls, also known as Agumatsa Falls, is a two-stage waterfall on the Agumatsa River in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, near the villages of Wli and Afegame and roughly 20 km from Hohoe town. The upper cascade drops about 80 m, with a lower fall of about 65 m. The Ewe name Agumatsa is given as "Allow Me to Flow."

The walk to the falls passes through the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, a forest of medicinal and economic tree species. The sanctuary is cited as home to a large colony of fruit bats roosting on the cliffs, along with butterflies, birds, monkeys and baboons; it is credited with more than 200 bird species and 400 butterfly species. Pools at the base of both falls allow swimming.

Two routes are offered. The lower falls are reached by an easy, mostly flat trail of about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, crossing streams on footbridges at roughly ten points. The upper falls require a steeper, more challenging hike of about 3 to 4 hours. The site is open year-round, daily from 8 am to 5 pm, and is described as most impressive between April and October; the upper route is slippery in the rainiest months.

Wli operates as a community-based ecotourism facility with operational oversight by the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Local Assembly. Revenue, after statutory payments and staff and maintenance allocations, is shared among communities of the Wli Traditional Area for community development, with a focus on women, children and youth. Host communities are Wli Agorviefe and Afegame, and the site records about 15,000 visitors a year.

A tourist reception centre processes visitors and allocates tour guides. The visitor centre has shaded seating, beverages, a gift shop and flush toilets, with brochures on display and basic refreshment stalls near the tourist office and car park. Six budget lodgings in the Wli area serve local and continental dishes; higher-end hotels are mostly in Hohoe, about 10 minutes' drive away. Homestays can be arranged and camping is permitted. Cultural groups are available to perform on request.
