Why visit

About Fort Coenraadsburg

Fort Coenraadsburg, better known as Fort St. Jago, is a small fort on a high hill directly opposite St. George's Castle (Elmina Castle) in Elmina, Central Region. A Portuguese chapel dedicated to Saint Jago once stood on this ground. In 1637 the Dutch placed heavy guns on the hill and bombarded the weakest side of the Portuguese-held castle below, forcing its surrender. By the 1660s the Dutch had built a permanent fort here, which the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board describes as "the oldest and purely military architecture of the Gold Coast."

The fort was built for defence rather than trade. It held military quarters and no commercial warehouses, and its strongest bastions faced inland. It was well garrisoned, and the Dutch used it as a prison for European convicts and as a disciplinary institution for disobedient officers. After 1872 the British made alterations, including adding a second floor to the main building, which opened the structure to civilian uses. In more recent times it has served as a prison, a hospital and a rest house. GMMB states that it is currently in fairly good condition and has been earmarked as an inn and a restaurant.

For a visitor, the appeal is largely positional and historical: the fort sits on a hill overlooking Elmina and the Atlantic coast, and its story is inseparable from the castle it was built to dominate. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 as part of the Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions property.

Access requires effort. Sources describe a steep hill and a challenging climb in the region's humid climate, and note that the hilltop location and steep paths may be difficult for visitors with mobility impairments. One source refers to "a short hike or drive up to Fort St. Jago," suggesting vehicle access is possible, but no official GMMB accessibility statement was found, and there is no verified information on wheelchair access, ramps or accessible facilities.

Fort St. Jago is in GMMB custody. GMMB publishes a "Forts and Regional Museums" fee category, stated as applicable prior to a recent revision, with Ghanaian adult entry at GH₵ 10.00 and non-Ghanaian adult entry at GH₵ 40.00; the page does not name Fort St. Jago individually, and a further revision effective 1 July is announced without a published table. Opening hours were not verified. GMMB's Central and Western Regions office is at Cape Coast Castle, Cape Coast, telephone +233-3321 32529.
