Why visit

About Elmina Fishing Harbour

Elmina Fishing Harbour is a working fishing port and landing site in Elmina, in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of Ghana's Central Region. It sits on the Atlantic coast directly below Elmina Castle, and an 80 m touristic quay links the harbour to the castle area.

The harbour was rehabilitated and expanded under a €84 million project that began in August 2020 and was commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 26 May 2023, making it the biggest fishing harbour in the Central Region. The marine and civil works include a 450 m south breakwater with a cubipod round head, a 160 m north breakwater tied into the existing sea defence, a 65,000 m2 basin dredged to 3–5 m, and 400 m of quay walls.

For a visitor, the appeal is the working waterfront itself: fishermen landing their catch and the brightly painted wooden pirogues. Activity peaks at the morning returns and the evening departures. The harbour is managed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

Ancillary facilities are largely operational rather than touristic. They include an administration block with offices and a viewing deck, a new fish market, a net-mending area, a fish auction hall, an ablution facility, toilets and a daycare centre, along with shops selling fishing gear and equipment. No visitor-oriented amenities such as cafes or tourist restrooms are documented.

Practical planning is limited by what is officially published. No fixed opening hours are recorded; activity follows the fishing day, with boats coming in from around 6:00 am and the quayside market running until the catch is gone, and 6:00–9:00 is noted as the best window for landings. No official entrance fee is published, and the harbour is described as free to walk around, with tips expected for local guiding. Visitors should treat timings as indicative rather than guaranteed.
