About Elmina Fish Market

Elmina Fish Market is a working fish market on the quay of Elmina's fishing harbour, on the Benya Lagoon on Ghana's southern coast in the Central Region. It sits beside Elmina Castle, in the Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal District, and below Fort St. Jago on the hill above. This is a place of daily work rather than a staged attraction: boats come in from around six in the morning and trading continues until the catch is gone.

The harbour itself is the main spectacle. A January 2024 review describes a bridge overlooking it that gives a bird's-eye view of what the writer called a "seething mass of pirogues and people" — an "incredibly busy" scene of porters carrying metal bowls or baskets on their heads while fish are unloaded and sold by the fishermen's wives. The same account notes that boats are rented, with catch proceeds divided between boat owner and crew and a third share set aside for maintenance, and that large wooden boats were under construction and bright blue nets mended by hand at the far end of the harbour.

Women are central to the trade. They buy directly from the boats, sort the catch by species and size, and either sell it fresh or send it to smokehouses behind the quay, where fish are laid on wire racks over smouldering wood fires for hours. Fish that is not sold fresh is processed this way.

For a visitor, the appeal is proximity to an unedited working harbour: hundreds of boats and people, and fresh fish bought directly from fishermen. The bridge over the lagoon and the walls of Fort St. Jago are noted vantage points over the scene. Because this is an active market, expect crowds, noise and the ordinary rhythm of landing and selling rather than visitor facilities. Opening hours, entry arrangements, guided access and any fees are not established by the available sources and should be confirmed locally before a visit.
