About Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop
Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop is a working carpentry studio in Teshie, a coastal suburb of Accra in the Ledzokuku Municipal District of Greater Accra. It is best known for design coffins — often called fantasy coffins — which the Ga people know as abebuu adekai, "boxes with proverbs." Seth Kane Kwei (1922–1992), a Ga carpenter joiner in Teshie, is long credited as the inventor of the form in the early 1950s, and the studio has continued since his death, passing to his son Sowah, then Cedi, and since 2005 to Eric Adjetey Anang, who has sought to revitalize it. Coffins are shaped as animals, buildings, fruits, objects and vehicles; lighter woods such as wawa or emien are used for burial coffins, while export artworks use harder woods such as limba or African mahogany. Works from the workshop have appeared in exhibitions including Magiciens de la Terre at the Centre Pompidou in 1989.
For a visitor, the appeal is less a museum than a live craft floor. The workshop functions through apprentices — roughly ten at a time — who serve two to five years before a traditional ceremony, so the making of the coffins is part of what you see. Expect raw timber, sanding, carved forms, primer and bright paint, apprentices shaping details, finished display pieces and commissioned coffins awaiting collection. Small-scale decorative coffins are sold as souvenirs, and mornings are described as the busiest time. One visitor account describes a showroom reached by climbing up, with crafters explaining their work on three or four caskets.
The setting is Teshie-Nungua, adjacent to the Melcom store and a Total filling station on Teshie Road; listings give the address as Teshie First Junction by the Total gas station. Practical conditions are those of an active yard: dust, tools, paint smell, uneven ground, heat and road noise are normal, and closed shoes are advisable. The official website offers only a contact form, which it says is answered within three to five business days; a business-managed listing also gives a phone number and email. Opening hours, admission fees and tour arrangements are not confirmed by the sources reviewed, so visitors should confirm before travelling.
