About Nkyinkyim Museum

Nkyinkyim Museum is an outdoor museum and evolving art installation set in the farmlands of Nuhalenya-Ada in the Greater Accra Region, near Ada Foah. Its operator describes it as Ghana's largest outdoor museum. It is the creation of Ghanaian multi-disciplinary artist and educator Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, founder and creative director of the Ancestor Project/Nkyinkyim Museum. He began archiving oral history and heritage in 2006, sculpted his first collection of figurative heads in 2009, and in 2013 those sculptures were placed in the Sacred Area at the museum. The Ancestor Project was registered as a non-profit in 2019.

The centrepiece is the Nkyinkyim Installation, an evolving collection of figurative sculptures honouring enslaved African ancestors. Parts of it were exhibited publicly in 2017 — Fauxreedom, at the tomb of Kwame Nkrumah, and "Portraits of the Middle Passage, In Situ" at Cape Coast Castle — before installation at the Sacred Area. A section was later installed at the Equal Justice Initiative National Memorial for Peace and Justice and Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. The museum's stated purpose is healing and restorative justice from the legacies of African enslavement and colonialism.

The museum combines African art, history and performance with intangible cultural heritage such as drumming, dancing, traditional rites and food, and uses trained griots to interpret the sculptures. Visitors can expect griot-led walking tours of about 90 minutes, art workshops, meals, ceremonies and overnight stays. Shoes are removed before entering the Sacred Area.

The site is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. The operator advises planning ahead, wearing comfortable walking shoes, staying hydrated and bringing a hat or fan, since this is an outdoor museum. To reach it, continue on the Ada Foah Road for approximately 10 kilometres until you reach Nuhalenya. The operator publishes no standalone gate fee; charges apply per activity and per package, and some programming is free. Contact details are published on the operator's own site.
