Why visit

About Takoradi Monkey Hill

Takoradi Monkey Hill is a forested hill and green space inside the city of Takoradi, in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Area of Ghana's Western Region. The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) lists it among the metropolis's tourist sites, under the category "Tourist Site", with the location given as Takoradi Paa Grants Roundabout. Community Conservation describes the same place simply as "a forest within the city".

Its interest for visitors lies mainly in that combination: a patch of forest and wildlife habitat standing within an urban area rather than out in the countryside. Community Conservation records Monkey Hill as a primate habitat conservation site, targeting Geoffroy's black and white colobus (Colobus vellosus), the white naped mangabey (Cercocebus atys lunulatus) and Lowe's guenon (Cercopithecus campbelli lowei), and gives its status as established, sustained by local leaders. The organisation's first project there was to help turn Monkey Hill into a tourist attraction, and it notes that the area has facilities including a hotel and restaurant now owned by Vodafone.

The hill has also drawn attention from public tourism officials. Graphic Online, quoting the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, described it as "the evergreen Monkey Hill, strategically located and very close to the tourists and still a habitat for some wildlife and must be further developed", and listed it among Sekondi sites left unattended to. Ghana Business News reported in 2019 that the Monkey Hill Reserve was abandoned and under threat, and that the Ghana Tourism Authority planned to promote the place to investors, but that the GTA, STMA and the Forestry Commission would first have to agree.

Practical planning information is limited. No verified opening hours, entrance fees or visitor facilities were confirmed for this draft, so visitors should not assume that access, guided walks or amenities are available. The hill is described as being close to Takoradi's tourist routes and near the Paa Grants Roundabout, which places it within reach of the city centre, but the condition of paths, the safety of any trails and the current state of the site are unknown. Treat Monkey Hill as a place to confirm locally before making a special trip.
