About Sekondi-Takoradi museum

Bisa Aberwa Museum is a not-for-profit, non-governmental Pan African museum in Nkontompo, a suburb of Sekondi-Takoradi in Ghana's Western Region. It is dedicated to preserving the history of the Black race, promoting African values and celebrating Pan African heroes, and it sits within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Area, near the Effie Nkwanta Hospital.

The collection holds roughly 2,200 artefacts, sculptures and photographs relating to the African struggle and the African American civil rights movement, including works in wood, clay, cement and paintings. It is described as one of the world's largest private collections of artefacts, audio-visual material and sculptures representing African history. Named figures represented in sculpture include Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the Sandema Warriors, Harriet Tubman, Jacob Wilson Sey, Princess Yennenga, Kwame Nkrumah and Marcus Garvey.

The museum was curated by award-winning filmmaker Kwaw Ansah, founder and first CEO of TV Africa, working from a collection begun in the 1980s. It was inaugurated on 28 July 2019 by then First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, with government officials and traditional leaders present. The official site describes over 2,000 exhibits in sculpture, soundbites and visual presentations covering Africa before, during and after the slave trade era.

Beyond the galleries, the museum runs quarterly lectures and events, and keeps a shop of carved totems and stools, along with a membership scheme. For visitors interested in Pan African history, the African diaspora and the civil rights movement, the collection's scale and its mix of sculpture and audio-visual material are the main draw.

Practical planning: the operator's own site lists hours of 9am to 6pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, closed Mondays. The published address is Plot 13/18 Bisa Aberwa Street, Nkotum Mpo, Sekondi. Contact details published by the museum are +233 312 299 898 and [email protected]. A secondary travel page gives different hours (9am to 5pm daily) and itself advises confirming with the museum, so hours should be checked before travelling. The museum is also known as Bisa Abrewa Museum.
