Why visit
About Market Circle, Takoradi
Takoradi Market Circle is a market in Takoradi, the commercial and economic hub of Ghana's Western Region and the country's third largest city. It takes its name from the large circle in which it sits, with the market's stores built to form that shape. The market was planned and built by city engineers to serve as the nucleus of trading for the new city of Takoradi, which grew busy after the construction of Takoradi Harbour; high export activity drew migrants seeking work, and the market was established at an easily accessible site.
All kinds of economic activity take place in and around the market, and most major banks have branches in the surrounding area. Hawkers without stalls sell goods across pedestrian walkways, parking spaces and wooden sheds. The market became congested in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which prompted the creation of a new market at Apremodo, about 10 km away. Fires have caused major destruction, most recently on 16 March 2007.
A redevelopment project began in September 2020 to replace the old market structure, which was constructed in the 1920s. STMA reported in November 2021 that 19.19% of construction works were complete, with heavy rains cited as the main challenge. Works were suspended in early 2023 under the Government's debt restructuring programme, leaving the project unfinished.
As of September 2026 the project remained stalled, with €18 million owed to the contractor and a new funding arrangement being pursued; the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs inspected the site on 22 September 2026. The Ministry of Finance had reported in November 2025 that the project had been abandoned for three years and was captured as a priority project of government. When completed, it is intended to transform one of Ghana's oldest trading centres into a modern commercial hub, improving sanitation, easing congestion and revitalizing economic activity across the Western Region.
The market falls under the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, which lists contact details of phone 0312046371 and email [email protected], at Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Box 74, Sekondi, Western Region. No dedicated market office contact was found. Because the site is an active construction zone in a stalled state, visitors should treat current conditions as unverified.
