Takoradi, in Ghana's Western Region, rewards travellers who like their cities working rather than polished. The eight places gathered here share a coastal, harbour-facing character and a strong sense of local life, yet they differ widely in what they offer. Takoradi Harbour is Ghana's oldest seaport, commissioned in 1928, and remains a secured working industrial port with restricted public access, so it is a landmark to appreciate rather than wander through. Fort Orange in Sekondi, a 17th-century Dutch-founded coastal fort, is now a lighthouse site and a Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority naval base. Market Circle is a long-established market whose 2020 redevelopment has been stalled since early 2023, while Apremdo Palace, a traditional palace and cultural site, is described by directories as a small museum of local artifacts.

For greenery and family time, Takoradi Monkey Hill is a forested hill and primate habitat conservation site listed by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly as a tourist site, and Butumagyabu Attaa Park is a public green space used for relaxation, picnics and family outings. Harbour View Gardens, an elevated garden, bar and restaurant in the Harbour Area, overlooks Takoradi Port and is marked by a war memorial at its entrance. Heritage Fun Park on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Road advertises a mini zoo, donkey ride, sports park, indoor games and an events centre.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around access rather than distance. Takoradi Harbour is a secured working port with restricted public access, and Fort Orange is a lighthouse site and naval base, so check what, if anything, is open to visitors before you set out. Market Circle's redevelopment has been stalled since early 2023, so expect an active, changing market environment. Monkey Hill is a conservation site, so treat wildlife and forest with care. Harbour View Gardens and Heritage Fun Park suit families and slower afternoons. Confirm current arrangements locally, allow for Sekondi-Takoradi traffic, and carry water and sun protection.
