About Bisa Aberwa Museum

Bisa Aberwa Museum is a not-for-profit, non-governmental Pan African museum at Nkontompo, in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of Ghana's Western Region. It sits on Bisa Aberwa Road/Street, roughly halfway between the harbours of Sekondi and Takoradi, and is registered as an education-based non-profit organisation. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the Black race, promoting African values and celebrating Pan African heroes.

The collection was curated by Kwaw Ansah, the award-winning filmmaker and founder and first CEO of TV Africa, from material he began gathering in the 1980s. The museum was inaugurated on 28 July 2019 by Ghana's First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, with government officials and traditional leaders present.

Across three floors, the museum holds over 2,000 exhibits — about 2,200 artifacts — including sculptures and busts in wood, clay, cement and bronze, paintings and photographs. Subjects include Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the Sandema Warriors, Harriet Tubman, Jacob Wilson Sey, Princess Yennenga, Kwame Nkrumah and Marcus Garvey, alongside material on the slave-trade era and the African American civil rights movement. Exhibits combine sculpture, sound-bites and visual presentations, and guided visits take about an hour.

The site is tucked among private homes with tropical gardens. Visitors should note that there are stairs and no elevators, so the three floors are reached on foot.

The museum is open 9am to 6pm Tuesdays to Sundays and closed on Mondays. Contact details published by the museum are [email protected] and the phone numbers +233 312 299 898 and +233 264 170 741. The official site gives the address as Plot 13/18 Bisa Aberwa Street, Nkotum Mpo, Sekondi, Western Region; other listings place it on Bisa Aberwa Road, Takoradi. Published coordinates are feature coordinates for the museum rather than a verified visitor entrance, so it is worth confirming the exact entrance before travelling.
