About Kumasi Zoo

Kumasi Zoo, also known as the Kumasi Zoological Garden, is a city-centre zoo in central Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana. It occupies a 1.5-square-kilometre (370-acre) area between the Kejetia Bus Terminal, the old race course and the Kumasi Centre for National Culture, placing it within easy reach of some of the city's busiest landmarks.

The zoo was established in 1951 and officially opened to the public in 1957 by the Asanteman Council, with the stated aims of conserving nature and displaying indigenous Ghanaian wildlife. It is managed by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, the body that administers Ghana's wildlife-protected areas as well as the Accra and Kumasi Zoos.

Its collection is modest in scale: roughly 40 species and more than 135 individual animals, including primates such as chimpanzees, reptiles, cats, rodents and birds. A distinctive feature is the thousands of bats that roost in trees within the zoo's boundaries. The grounds also function as a green lung in the urban landscape and support an educational role in wildlife conservation and biodiversity, with facilities used for scientific research, field laboratory work and breeding programmes for endangered species.

For visitors, the zoo is a walkable stop rather than a full-day excursion, and it is particularly associated with school groups — about 80% of visitors are local school children. Opening hours are generally given as 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, though one secondary source states 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, so it is worth confirming before travelling. Admission prices are not documented here.
