Why visit
About Okomfo Anokye Sword Site
The Okomfo Anokye Sword Site is a sacred historical landmark on the grounds of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) on Stewart Avenue in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. It centres on a sword that Asante oral tradition holds was planted in the ground by Okomfo Anokye, the priest and co-founder of the Asante Kingdom, as a symbol of unity among the Akan states during the formation of the Asante Empire. Tradition holds that he declared no one would ever remove it. The site is also associated with the legend that the Golden Stool descended from the sky onto the lap of the first Asante king, Osei Tutu.
Ghana Tourism Authority describes the sword, wedged in the rock face and said to be more than 300 years old, as one of the central artefacts and legends of the Asante nation. The history of the Asante people is told by the on-site curator, and the Asante king regularly comes to pay his respects at what the authority calls an important and sacred site. GhanaTRVL reports that the priest predicted the place would become a healing ground for millions, which is why the teaching hospital stands there, and that many attempts to pull the sword out have failed.
For a visitor, the appeal is compact and largely interpretive: the sword is enclosed in a small museum-like structure where guides explain Asante history and the sword's spiritual significance. Because the site is sacred, visitors are asked to dress appropriately. Kupi describes a typical visit as short, around 30 to 60 minutes.
Practical planning is limited by what the sources confirm. The site sits within a large hospital complex, so coordinates help with navigation; the mapped feature is at approximately 6.6964, -1.6290, though this is not confirmed as a visitor entrance. A phone and WhatsApp number, +233 27 747 3288, is listed by a community directory and Kupi, but no official operator contact page was found. Opening hours, entry fees, guide availability and accessibility arrangements are not established by the available evidence and should be confirmed locally before travelling.
