About Kejetia Market
Kejetia Market, also called Kumasi Central Market, is a large open-air marketplace in the central commercial district of Kumasi, in Ghana's Ashanti Region. The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly describes it as the largest single market in West Africa, and it has been merged with the adjacent Kumasi Central Market. Reported figures include more than 8,000 stores and stalls, roughly 20,000 vendors and about 50,000 visitors a day. The market was established in 1924 and modelled after British markets.
A redevelopment announced in August 2015 replaced much of the market with a modern indoor complex. Phase 1, valued at about US$259 million, added roughly 8,420 stores and was completed in late 2018. Phase 2, a project of about €248 million financed by Deutsche Bank, began in 2019 and remains incomplete; the Ashanti Regional Minister has said work would resume in October, with construction reported at 49 per cent completion and about €32 million still owed to contractors.
The market covers more than 12 hectares across multiple levels. The ground floor holds shops, a food area with street food and small restaurants, and the "station side" trotro and taxi terminal; upper floors sell clothing, textiles, electronics and household goods, with banks and larger shops in the modern section. The redeveloped ceiling carries Adinkra symbols, including Nkyinkyim, Adinkrahene and Akofena, in yellow, orange, red and purple.
Trading and commercial activity is permitted Monday to Saturday, 06:00–19:00, according to the operator, Kumasi City Markets Limited, which announced a 19:00 closure from June 2021. The market sits near Adum, Bantama and Asokwa. Fires in 2016 and on 24 January 2025 destroyed shops and property; the Ghana National Fire Service response in 2025 saved 23 shops.
