About Keta Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Convent

Keta Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Convent is an old Catholic convent in Keta, in the Keta Municipal District of the Volta Region, Ghana. It is associated with the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA), a congregation founded in Lyon in 1876 by Fr. Augustine Planque. The convent is a working Catholic religious and educational institution rather than a managed visitor attraction.

Its historical interest lies largely in education. The convent gave rise to OLA R/C Convent Girls Basic School, described by Catholic Trends as established in 1912 by the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles and as one of the oldest Catholic basic schools in the Keta Municipality. The school is now managed by the Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church (SMMC) under the Keta-Akatsi Diocese, and its own website describes a boarding house run by sisters and a mission of holistic education for girls.

The convent also has a place in the story of secondary education in the area. In 1954, Bishop Anthony Konings founded Queen of Apostles Secondary School — now OLA Senior High School — in Keta with 35 students, borrowing the convent's boarding facilities. The school was administered by OLA Sisters under its first headmistress, Rev. Sr. Theodorus Fahy, before moving to Ho in 1955/1956.

Ghanaian tourism writer Joel Degue cites the convent among heritage reasons to visit the Keta-Anloga area, stating that it played a major role in the education of several Ghanaian women who hold high positions today, including former First Lady Theresa Kufuor.

For a visitor, the practical picture is limited. No street address or coordinates are published by any source read, and no visitor facilities, tours, opening hours, fees, or interpretation are documented. Sources describe an active convent and school, so anyone in Keta with an interest in Catholic mission history or girls' education should treat this as a place to view respectfully from outside, and should not expect organised visitor access.
