About Keta Market

Keta Market is a traditional open-air market in Keta, the capital of Keta Municipal District in the Volta Region of Ghana. It sits in the town centre near the coast, close to Fort Prinzenstein and Keta beach, and Fort Prinzenstein is reached along Keta Market Road.

Ghana News Agency reporting describes it as one of the oldest markets established in the Volta Region, dating to around the 15th century, and as a place that historically drew traders from far and near dealing in fish, salt and vegetables — the area's major commodities. A former assembly member and market queen, Madam Rejoice Adzo, described it as a colonial-era market that once attracted traders from Northern Volta, Togo and Dzemeni.

For a visitor, the market's interest lies in that long trading history and in the produce associated with the district. The Keta Tourism district page notes that markets in the area sell live chickens, local salt, locally caught fish and the famous Keta shallots, alongside colourful fabrics.

Amenities are limited. In 2024 traders appealed for reconstruction into a modern market with multi-storey stalls, a clinic for market days, a crèche and educational centre, and modern washrooms — requests that imply these facilities were lacking at the time. The Keta Municipal Assembly renovated some market sheds in 2021 using internally generated funds. Drivers also complained about the poor town roads linking the market.

Practical details are largely unverified. No opening hours, entrance fees, stall counts or guided-visit arrangements are confirmed in the available sources, and the market's precise coordinates remain uncertain. Visitors should treat the market as a working local trading place rather than a managed attraction, and plan around the town centre location near the fort and the beach.
