About Ezile River Mangrove Canoe Experience
The Ezile River Mangrove Canoe Experience is a guided wooden-canoe trip along the mangroves of the Ezile River at Akwidaa, in the Ahanta West Municipal District of Ghana's Western Region. The river divides the village in two: Old Town sits on sandy ground at the river mouth, while New Town lies inland on higher ground. The operator One Africa Foundation Ghana advertises the trip as an "Ezile River Canoe Tour" or "Mangrove Canoe Ride," describing paddling through mangroves of Ghana's coastal rainforest with local navigators at the paddles.
The same operator lists wildlife viewing as part of the experience, naming flying fish, black-and-white colobus monkeys, kingfishers, African grey parrots and fish eagles. These are the operator's own claims rather than independently verified sightings, so treat any particular animal as a possibility rather than a promise. The stated tour duration is 1.5 to 2 hours, with departures advertised daily in the morning and afternoon.
Akwidaa lies on Ghana's southwest coast, east of Cape Three Points. Travel guides describe the village as roughly 1.5 hours' drive from Takoradi and about 45 minutes from Agona; one older account suggests taking a tro-tro from Takoradi to Agona junction, then a taxi or tro-tro onward toward Akwidaa. No verified coordinates for the canoe launch point were obtained, and the operator gives the meeting point only as "Akwidaa/Ezile Village."
Other accounts describe the same stretch of river from different angles. A travel guide mentions a local guide named Ben with a small tour shop near the river in New Town, who takes visitors along the mangroves and can optionally show an old fort. A 2011 travel article reported canoe trips arranged through Green Turtle Lodge at $6 per person, with profits going to an Akwidaa community fund. Ghana Ecotours lists cruising the Ezile River mangroves and reaching Cape Three Points by sea in a motorized dugout canoe as part of an Akwidaa itinerary. The nearby Fort Dorothea ruins, a Brandenburg-era site dating from 1685 to 1709, form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site component.
Practical details are thin. No price is published for the canoe ride itself; the operator's page offers only a booking contact, and the "affordable rates and group discounts" wording appears under a separate lighthouse and hiking trail tour. No fixed opening hours are published either, only the daily morning and afternoon departures. Visitors should confirm current arrangements, timing and cost directly with the operator before travelling.
