Explore Ghana
Akwidaa sits in the Ahanta West District of Ghana's Western Region, a small fishing town split between a coastal Old Town and an inland New Town, with fort ruins and beaches close at hand. It is a place for travellers who like their history weathered and their nature close by, and the seven spots gathered here share that character: almost all of them are reached on foot, by canoe or with a local guide, and several depend on permission from the community.
The differences are in what you do when you arrive. Cape Three Points, Ghana's southernmost tip, is a fishing village and peninsula known for its 1875 lighthouse ruin and working 1925 tower, with the lighthouse itself offering history, a viewpoint and a heritage site in one. Fort Dorothea is a ruined 17th-century Brandenburg-era fortification on a rocky hill, reached by trekking with the local chief's permission. Inland, the Cape Three Points Forest Reserve has been protected since 1949 and is recognised as a Globally Significant Biodiversity Area and Important Bird Area, while the Ezile River mangrove canoe experience runs guided wooden-canoe trips with local navigators and advertised wildlife viewing.
Good to know
Plan around walking and water rather than driving. Fort Dorothea and the Cape Three Points lighthouse are reached on foot, and the fort in particular needs permission from the local chief, so ask locally before setting out. The Ezile River canoe trips are guided, with local navigators, so arrange them in the town rather than expecting to turn up and paddle yourself. Akwidaa's Old Town and New Town are separate, so check which one your accommodation and meeting point are in. Before you go, confirm current access to the forest reserve and the fort, and take water, sun protection and sturdy shoes.
