About Akwidaa

Akwidaa is a small town and fishing village in Ahanta West District, Western Region, Ghana, and one of the southernmost places in the country. It has two parts: Akwidaa Old Town, close to the Gulf of Guinea, and Akwidaa New Town, set inland. Old Town occupies low-lying ground beside a wetland and a river mouth, where flooding and erosion linked to climate change have prompted most residents to move inland.

The town has been settled for centuries by the Ahanta people. Its name is a Twi word meaning "old man", said to refer to a man who ferried people across the Ezile River during Dutch colonial times. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries Akwidaa, then the site of Fort Dorothea, was the smaller of two forts making up the Brandenburger Gold Coast; the Dutch occupied the fort from 1687 to 1698, and the Brandenburgers sold it in 1718. Fort ruins here were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 along with other forts in the region.

Fishing remains the mainstay of the economy, with boats lining the shoreline, alongside agriculture. Women in the community smoke and process fish, and residents depend heavily on the sea. Oil discovery made the district an investment focus. Akwidaa is also promoted as a community tourism destination on Ghana's west coast, known for its beaches, culture and a nearby forest reserve.

Since April 2026 Akwidaa has been a host community of Ghana's first Marine Protected Area, the 703.86 sq km Greater Cape Three Points MPA in the Western Region, which covers 21 coastal communities and is managed by an interim Management Executive Committee with no-take, gear-restricted and transition zones. Residents interviewed in 2026 raised concerns about declining fish stocks and called for improved roads and health facilities.

For accommodation, third-party listings describe Akwidaa Inn, a beachfront lodge in Old Town on the Dixcove–Akwidaa Old Town Road, offering thatched-hut rooms with en suite bathrooms, a restaurant and bar, beach access, Wi-Fi and event facilities. These details come from booking and business listings rather than a verifiable operator site, so confirm arrangements directly before travelling.
