About Bonwire Kente Weaving Village

Bonwire is a town in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, roughly 18 km along the Kumasi–Mampong road, and it is the historic home of kente weaving — a living centre of Asante textile tradition rather than a preserved relic. The town sits in the Ejisu Municipality; older listings still use the legacy district name Ejisu-Juaben Municipal, so visitors may see both in circulation.

Akan oral tradition places the origin of kente here. Two hunters, remembered as brothers, Kuragu and Ameyaw, are said to have learned weaving by watching a spider spin its web in the mid-17th century, producing a cloth known in Asante-Twi as Nwin-Ntom, or woven cloth. The cloth was later adopted as a royal art by the Asantehene Osei Tutu I, and an improved design resembling a basket surface, kenten, is said to have given kente its name. Visit Ghana states there are more than 300 kente patterns, each carrying a name and meaning drawn from proverbs, historical events, chiefs and plants.

For a visitor, the appeal is proximity to the work itself. A visitor centre is where tours are arranged. From there, a community kente workshop offers the chance to learn about and try thread spinning, warping and weaving, and master weavers can be met in person. Tours of the village show residents at different stages of production on traditional hand looms, along with the different yarns used, and village shops sell kente and other local crafts. Beyond The Return suggests allowing one to two hours.

Practical notes: the Visit Ghana contact number is 0244378599. Homestay accommodation exists in the village, with hotels in Ejisu and Kumasi, about 19 km away; meals can be ordered for delivery and liquid refreshments are available in the village. Visit Ghana's directions run from Accra via the Accra–Kumasi road, turning right at Ejisu and driving 6 km to Bomfa Junction, then left for 3 km and right to Bonwire. A Bonwire Kente Festival is held each year, where new designs are outdoored. The Bonwire Kente Museum was commissioned on 10 January 2024.
