Why visit

About Bonwire Palace

Bonwire Palace is the traditional palace of the Chief of Bonwire, Nana Bobie Ansah II, in Bonwire, in the Ejisu Municipality of Ghana's Ashanti Region. The chief is identified as serving under the Ejisu (Adweso) Traditional Area of the Ashanti Kingdom. Bonwire itself is the historic home of kente weaving, and the palace sits within that weaving village rather than standing apart from it.

For visitors, the palace is best understood as a working traditional and community venue rather than a conventional ticketed attraction. Its documented visitor-facing role is as the setting for Akan naming ceremonies, presided over by the village chief and queen-mother. In the ceremony described in tour listings, prayers are offered and two names are bestowed — a soul name and a family name — with a certificate presented to the participant.

The palace also functions as a gathering place for community occasions. In 2024 it hosted a short ceremony at which MTN Ghana donated assorted drinks, cash and airtime in support of the Bonwire Kente Festival, held from 14 to 20 October 2024.

Practical planning is limited by what is documented. No verified street address or coordinates for the palace itself were found, and the palace is not documented as a standalone ticketed attraction with published opening hours or admission fees. Access to the naming ceremony is arranged through tour operators, and the tour listings that describe the ceremony place the wider visit in the Bonwire Kente Weaving Centre area. Bonwire town lies less than five kilometres from Ejisu, the municipal capital, according to the Ejisu Municipal Assembly's medium-term development plan.

Because the palace is an active traditional institution, arrangements and availability should be confirmed through the operator or host before travelling. Details such as ceremony scheduling, cost and what is included are not established in the available sources.
