Bonwire is the historic home of kente weaving, a working town in the Ejisu Municipality of Ghana's Ashanti Region where the cloth is still made on narrow looms much as it always has been. It sits about 18 km from Kumasi, along the Kumasi–Mampong road, which makes it an easy half-day or full-day trip from the city.
All four places here belong to the same story. The Bonwire Kente Museum and the Bonwire Kente Weaving Centre both explain and show the craft, while the Bonwire Kente Weaving Village is the wider town itself, a living centre of Asante textile tradition. Bonwire Palace, the traditional palace of the Chief of Bonwire, Nana Bobie Ansah II, adds the ceremonial side of Akan life, used for naming ceremonies and community events.
They differ mainly in what you do there. The museum is for heritage and context, the weaving centre is where tours, weaving demonstrations and village craft shops are based, the village is for wandering and meeting weavers, and the palace is a heritage and community site rather than a craft one.
Good to know
Plan Bonwire as a trip out from Kumasi, since the town lies about 18 km along the Kumasi–Mampong road. The museum, weaving centre, village and palace are all in Bonwire itself, so you can move between them on foot or with a short local hop rather than long drives. Before you go, check opening times and whether demonstrations or palace visits are running that day, as these depend on the community and on events. Bring cash for craft shops, ask before photographing people or ceremonies, and dress respectfully for the palace.
