Why visit
About Nzema East Municipal Assembly
The Nzema East Municipal Assembly is the local government authority for Nzema East Municipal in Ghana's Western Region, with Axim as its municipal capital. It was established by Legislative Instrument L I 1917 on 25 January 2008 and is one of fourteen administrative authorities in the Western Region. For visitors, its relevance is practical rather than recreational: it is the body that handles permits, certificates and municipal services in the area, and it is also the authority that documents and promotes the municipality's tourism attractions.
The Assembly's office is at Bankyim, adjacent to the SSNIT office, in Axim. Its stated opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Postal correspondence is directed to P. O. Box 25 Bankyim, Axim, Western Region, with postcode WN0001. The Assembly publishes a website at nema.gov.gh, a client service line on 0312299580, a social welfare line on 0531449644, and email addresses at [email protected] and [email protected].
Public-facing services listed by the Assembly include building and construction permits, business operating permits, food vendors' and food handlers' certificates, waste management services and marriage certificates. Travellers with administrative business in the municipality — or businesses needing permits — would approach the Assembly here rather than in a larger regional centre.
The Assembly's own materials describe the municipality as rich in tourism attractions, while noting that most remain undeveloped. Its documented functions include facilitating the promotion of tourism and culture and identifying, studying and documenting tourism sites, and its Medium Term Development Plan 2018–2021 listed "unveiling the tourism potentials in the Municipality" among its priority areas. Tourism context recorded for the municipality includes long warm sandy beaches suited to beach tourism, the navigable Ankobra River with riverboat excursions, and Fort Santo Antonio in Axim, described as sub-Saharan Africa's second-oldest fort, built by the Portuguese around AD 1515 and now managed with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.
Treat the Assembly as an information and administrative stop rather than an attraction in itself. It is a reasonable first point of contact for orientation on the municipality and for confirming which sites are accessible, but it does not itself operate the attractions, and no visitor facilities, guided tours, fees or site-level opening hours are documented in the available sources.
