Axim sits on the Western Region coast, where the Atlantic meets a town shaped by centuries of trade, worship and defence. Almost everything worth seeing here is tied to that story or to the water around it. Fort Santo Antonio, begun by the Portuguese in 1515, and Fort St. Antony, the same promontory stronghold later held by the Dutch, are both UNESCO-listed state monuments. Old St James Methodist Church stands among the town's landmarks near Axim Beach and the fort, a quieter reminder of Axim's long life as a settlement.
The differences lie in how you spend your time. Some places reward a slow walk and a guide's explanation, while others are best seen from a boat. The Ankobra River Boat Tour, run by Ankobra Beach Retreat, offers a long Dominase market trip or a shorter mangrove canoe option, and Boboayisi Island and Bobowasi Island both lie out in Axim Bay, reached by boat, each known for its lighthouse. Axim Beach Resort's beachfront, a palm-covered hillside looking over the Atlantic, is where many visitors simply stop and breathe.
