About Boboayisi Island
Boboayisi Island is a small island in the Axim Bay of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Western Region's Nzema East Municipal, with Axim as the municipal capital. It sits roughly 1.8 km offshore from the town of Axim and Fort Saint Anthony (Axim Castle), north of Watts Rock, east of Egwang Rock and south of Mensell Hedwig Rock, at approximately 04°52′N 02°15′W. The island is also recorded under several spellings and names, including Bobowasi, Bobwasi, Boboewusi, Bobo Yesi and Bebo Arezi.
The island's most documented feature is a lighthouse, the Axim Lighthouse, managed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. It was built around 1915, and with some original lamp parts broken down, GPHA refurbished it with a new solar-powered light, wiring and controls. Visitors are documented climbing the lighthouse for views over the surrounding countryside, long stretches of sandy beach and the Axim township. The island also has landscaped grounds described as suitable for picnics, and a rocky beach around its shoreline.
Institutional listings treat Boboayisi as one of the municipality's tourism features. The Nzema East Municipal composite budget (2021) describes it as "an enticing retreat for both solitude and celebration", naming it alongside Fort Saint Anthony in Axim and the Ahunyame mysterious rock formation. The Western Regional Coordinating Council lists it as an island in the Axim Bay with a lighthouse, 1.8 km from Axim and Axim Castle. The Municipal Assembly notes that the area's attractions are "rich in tourism attractions although most of these are still undeveloped".
Access is by water only. Visitors are documented taking a cruise in a dugout canoe with an outboard motor from the Axim area, riding the waves to the island. There is no road access, and no step-free or wheelchair-access provision is documented. No shops, restaurants, accommodation or other visitor facilities are documented on the island itself, and no opening hours, fees or guided-tour arrangements appear in the available sources. Practical planning details should therefore be confirmed locally in Axim before travelling.
