Explore Ghana
Tongo is a small town in the Talensi District of Ghana's Upper East Region, about 15 km southeast of Bolgatanga, and it sits at the heart of a landscape that is both beautiful and deeply sacred. The places here share the same granite hills, the same Talensi heritage and the same sense of quiet. The Tongo Hills themselves are a range of balancing rock formations, caves and ancestral shrines, and almost everything worth seeing in Tongo is found within them.
What differs is what each place asks of you. Tengzug Shrine is the paramount shrine of the Talensi people, set among sacred shrines in the cliffs, and it is a place of worship first and a viewpoint second. Tenzug Cave School is a historic rock-overhang school site where formal education began between 1965 and 1985. The Tongo Chief's Palace is the royal court of the Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area and a stop on the official Tongo-Tengzuk Cultural Landscape tour. The Tongo Whistling Rocks are granite formations said to whistle in the harmattan winds of November and December.
Good to know
Tongo is easiest to reach from Bolgatanga, and the sites are close enough to visit together in a day, though the hills are steep and rocky underfoot, so wear sturdy shoes and carry water. The Chief's Palace is a stop on the official Tongo-Tengzuk Cultural Landscape tour, so ask about joining that rather than turning up unannounced. These are living sacred sites: dress modestly, ask before taking photographs, and follow the guidance of local custodians at the shrines. If you hope to hear the Whistling Rocks, plan around the harmattan winds of November and December. Check current access and any local protocols before you travel.
