About Tongo Whistling Rocks

The Tongo Whistling Rocks are granite rock formations in the Tongo Hills, near Tongo, the capital of the Talensi District in Ghana's Upper East Region. The rocks rise dramatically out of the surrounding terrain, and they are said to make strange whistling sounds in November and December, when the harmattan wind blows south from the Sahara across northern Ghana.

The hills around them are more than a geological curiosity. With their rock formations, caves and natural rock shelters, the Tongo Hills are described as the sacred epicentre of the Talensi people, and they hold numerous shrines. Three are singled out as prominent: Tona'ab, Bona'ab and Nyoo. Other named features in the hills include the Cave School, the Chief's Palace, and the donkey, hyena and hiding caves.

The site also carries a long record of human use. Archaeological surveys give evidence of people using the caves and shrines as far back as 500 B.C. In the 1880s and 1890s the hills served as a refuge from slave raiders, and in 1911 they were a focal point of resistance to British colonial rule. The site has been proposed for UNESCO World Heritage listing, and in 2005 it received a Visitor Attraction of the Year Award from the Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana Tourism Authority.

For orientation, the rocks lie about 10 kilometres from Bolgatanga, in the Tongo area of the Talensi District. Tongo itself is a small town near Bolgatanga and the district capital, which makes the site a short trip from the regional hub rather than a remote expedition.

Visitors should treat this as a living sacred landscape rather than a conventional monument. The shrines remain significant to the Talensi, so conduct and access around them are matters of local custom. Practical details such as opening hours, guiding arrangements, fees and the best way to reach the rocks are not established by the available sources and should be confirmed locally before travelling.
