About Tongo Chief's Palace
The Chief's Palace at Tongo is the royal court of the Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area, in Tongo — also written Tengzuk — in the Talensi District of Ghana's Upper East Region. It is not a standalone monument with its own ticket desk; it is one stop on the official tour of the Tongo-Tengzuk Cultural Landscape and Sacred Shrines, which the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) lists as including a model home, hills, caves, the Chief's house and the shrine.

That wider landscape is the reason most visitors come. It is a setting of balancing granite rock formations and Talensi ancestral shrines at the base of a horseshoe-shaped chain of hills, with the Ba'ar Tonna'ab Ya'nee shrine the best known. GMMB records that the Talensi have farmed this ground for centuries and perform the Boar Dam harvest festival in late October, centred on that shrine. The same source notes that the Hiding Caves in the area sheltered the local chief and his forces against the British around 1911, and that the harmattan wind of December to February produces a whistling sound through the rocks.
In practice, the palace is where a visit tends to begin. A first-person account describes the chief as the first person visitors greet before touring, receiving them in a modest apartment that the writer called arguably the largest palace in northern Ghana. Visitors should read that as one traveller's impression rather than a measured claim.

For planning, GMMB publishes a single fee for the landscape tour rather than a separate charge for the palace: Gh¢ 10.00 for non-Ghanaians, with Ghanaian visitors receiving a small discount. The tour covers the model home, hills, caves, the Chief's house and the shrine.

Tongo lies about 15 km southeast of Bolgatanga. Coordinates of roughly 10°43'N 0°48'W describe the town itself, not a verified palace entrance, so treat them as a general locator. Opening hours, guiding arrangements and any protocol for meeting the chief are not published in the sources reviewed here and should be confirmed locally before travelling.
