About Cape Three Points Forest Reserve
Cape Three Points Forest Reserve is a coastal rainforest reserve in the Ahanta West District of Ghana's Western Region, near Princes Town and the Akwidaa area. It lies roughly 3 km from the coast, and its proximity of closed-canopy forest to the sea is described as nationally unique. The reserve was declared a Forest Reserve in 1949.
The terrain is a series of small hills rising between about 91 and 152 m, drained by a single river, the Nyan. Mean annual rainfall is around 1,400 mm. Roughly 3,200 ha of the northern part remains intact and the reserve is described as only lightly disturbed, though its eastern side adjoins rubber plantations and farms occupy the surrounding unreserved forest. It is described as the only surviving remnant evergreen forest vegetation in the area.
Its conservation standing is well documented. It is recognised as a Globally Significant Biodiversity Area, designated in 1999, and as an Important Bird Area; it is confirmed as a Key Biodiversity Area and is one of Ghana's 30 Globally Significant Biodiversity Areas. Ghana nominated the reserve as its dedication under the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy. The site supports notable birds and mammals, including Cercocebus atys lunulatus and Cercopithecus diana roloway, both assessed as Critically Endangered, and Tragelaphus eurycerus. Botanical study here is long-standing, with plant collections dating from as far back as 1780.
For a visitor, the reserve's interest lies in that combination of forest, hills and nearby coastline, with beaches and an old castle in the surrounding area. Evidence of past gold-mining activity — prospecting pits and small abandoned mines — is present within the reserve. The supplied sources do not record opening hours, entry fees, guided walks, trails, facilities or transport arrangements, so these should be confirmed locally before travelling. The reserve's central coordinates are approximately 4.8560 latitude, -2.0473 longitude.
