Why visit
About Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum in downtown Accra is the final resting place of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and his wife Fathia Nkrumah. It is a monument and heritage site that also functions as a museum, and it stands on the Old Polo Grounds, where Nkrumah proclaimed Ghana's independence in 1957. The park covers approximately 5.3 acres.
The mausoleum, designed by Don Arthur, is clad in Italian marble with a black star at its apex symbolising unity. Its form represents an upside-down sword, an Akan symbol of peace, and it is surrounded by water as a symbol of life. A bronze statue of Nkrumah stands in front of the mausoleum.
The site holds a museum with Nkrumah's personal effects, books, photographs and the metal coffin donated by the people of Guinea. A 2022–2023 redevelopment added a presidential library, an audio-visual fountain, a mini amphitheatre, a restaurant, a gift shop and a new reception; the project was commissioned on 4 July 2023 and reopened to the public on 11 July 2023. Guided tours and gardens are part of the visitor offering.
The park is at Prof. Atta Mills High Street in the Accra Metropolitan Area, Greater Accra, with a listed GPS address of GA-184-8219. Published feature coordinates are approximately 5.54444, -0.20278; these describe the feature rather than necessarily the visitor entrance.
Opening hours are published as Mondays to Saturdays, 9:00am to 7:00pm, and Sundays, 10:00am to 7:00pm. Entrance fees are listed in Ghana cedis: for Ghanaians, adults 25, tertiary students 15, senior high and junior high students 10, and children 5; for non-Ghanaians, adults 100, tertiary students 60, and children 30. A standard event booking is listed at 5,000. Contact details are published at knmp.gov.gh, by email at [email protected], and by telephone on +233 53 007 6746 or +233 50 449 3993. Visitors should confirm current hours and rates before travelling, as published details can change.
