About Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council Tourism Information

Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary and Cultural Village is a community-based ecotourism and sacred grove conservation project in the village of Tafi Atome, in Ghana's Volta Region. The sanctuary was established in 1993 under the direction of a Peace Corps volunteer, and the village began broader forest and monkey protection and visitor tours in 1996. A Tourist Information and Receptive Centre at the site was commissioned by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture together with the Volta Regional Minister.

The grove itself is the reason the place exists. For roughly 200 years the mona monkeys of the surrounding tropical forest have been protected because residents believed they were messengers to the gods. The sacred grove covers approximately 28 hectares of semi-deciduous forest in the forest-savannah transitional zone, protected by a 2006 Hohoe District bylaw. The monkey population has since increased to about 200, and the forest, with its bird and butterfly species, has been preserved.

Visitors take guided walks led by local guides to see the wild but habituated monkeys. The village also offers cultural experiences including traditional drumming and dancing, kente weaving, farm visits and homestays. Tourism revenue has funded village electricity, school improvements and a community clinic. The Dayitsotsoke community celebration is held on 2 January each year.

The sanctuary is about 43 km south of Hohoe and about 230 km northeast of Accra. From the main Ho-Hohoe road at Logba Alekpeti, turn at the Monkey Sanctuary sign onto the dirt road and continue 5 km to the visitor centre. Trotros run from Accra, Ho or Hohoe to Logba Alekpeti, from where a local taxi or a 5 km walk completes the journey. Opening hours are 6 am to 6 pm daily. Monkeys are generally out at any time of day except from November through January, when they leave the village forest to forage roughly 6:00-8:00 am and 3:30-6:00 pm.
