About Upper East Regional Museum
The Upper East Regional Museum is an ethnographic museum in Bolgatanga, the capital of Ghana's Upper East Region. It was established in 1972 and installed at its current location in 1991 by the Ghana National Commission on Culture. It is operated under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, which is described as its legal custodian, and it is listed as a GMMB site.
Its stated aim is to preserve the material culture of the Upper East Region while educating the public, especially young people, on the need to protect and remember local heritage. Displays include local pottery, paintings, musical instruments, jewellery, weaponry, chiefs' possessions, carved darkwood stools and bronze ancestral vases. Other accounts describe ancestral clothing, hunting tools and historical images of regional archaeological sites, including Sudano-Sahelian style mud mosques and photographs of drilled stone "eating plates" associated with the Pikworo Slave Camp.
For visitors, the museum is a compact introduction to the region's material culture rather than a large national collection. It also arranges tours of other sites of interest in the Upper East Region, including the Tongo-Tengzuk Hills and Shrines and the Paga Crocodile Pond, which makes it a practical first stop for orientation.
The museum sits in central Bolgatanga, behind the Regional Library and adjacent to the craft village. Opening hours are published as 8:30am to 5:30pm daily. The postal address is P.O. Box 86, Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, and the published telephone number is +233 38 2023327.
Published entrance fees were last reviewed on 1 January 2015 and are not confirmed as current: pupils from primary to JHS 3 GH¢0.20; SHS and technical students GH¢0.50; tertiary students with ID GH¢1.00; Ghanaian adults GH¢2.00; foreign children GH¢2.00; foreign students with ID GH¢5.00; adult foreigners GH¢10.00. Non-Ghanaians may pay the cedi equivalent in foreign currency. Visitors should confirm fees and hours directly before travelling.
The saved map point (10.79432, -0.85597) is a feature location rather than a verified entrance, so it should be treated as an approximate guide to the museum's position in Bolgatanga.
