About Bolgatanga Naba's Palace

The Bolgatanga Naba's Palace is the traditional seat of the paramount chief of the Bolgatanga Traditional Area, in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, Ghana. It serves as the administrative and traditional centre of the paramountcy, and is classified as a palace, cultural site and heritage site. The seat is located in the Atulibabisi community of the Bolgatanga Traditional Area, within Bolgatanga Municipal.

For a visitor, the palace is best understood as a working traditional institution rather than a staged attraction. Its significance lies in the chieftaincy it houses: the Bolgatanga Naba is the paramount chief of the traditional area, and the palace is where that authority is centred. Travellers interested in how traditional governance in northern Ghana is organised, and in the relationship between a paramountcy and its community, will find that context here.

The paramountcy has been contested in recent years. The late Paramount Chief Naba Martin Adongo Abilba III died on 26 September 2013, and a longstanding dispute over his succession followed. In October 2016, the Judicial Committee of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs declared Naba Raymond Alafia Abilba the legitimate paramount chief; a rival claimant, Naba Joseph Apakre, was the subject of litigation. Reporting described the palace of the Bolga Naba filling with jubilant supporters after that ruling. In March 2025, the Bolgatanga Traditional Council asked the Upper East Regional Minister to help resolve the dispute.

Installation ceremonies are reported to involve traditional rites, including the "Royal Tree and Royal Stone". These are customary observances tied to the chieftaincy rather than scheduled public events.

Practical information is limited. No street address or coordinates for the palace were confirmed by the sources read, and no visitor facilities, guided tours, opening hours, fees or public access arrangements were confirmed. Anyone planning to visit should treat access as unverified and expect that the palace functions first as a traditional and administrative seat.
